Position Overview
The Senior Vice President of Operations (SVP) will be responsible for managing all activities across the Construction division (Telecom, Water/Sewer Utilities, Power, Technical Services), ensuring that our complex, large-scale programs and projects outperform third-party alternatives for value, quality, and time to delivery while meeting internal profitability objectives. The SVP reports to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the Executive Team to develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives aimed at driving growth and improving operational performance. The SVP is a highly visible and external-facing ambassador and as such is expected to solve complex problems, inspire collaboration, and encourage positive experiences for our clients, vendors, and employees.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the construction division (Telecom, Water/Sewer Utilities, Power, Technical Services), fostering a culture of accountability, high performance, and teamwork both within the department and across internal counterparties.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and best practices that
    promote a positive culture and ensure consistency and efficiency across all projects
  • Proactively assess market performance against established operating and financial
    goals and execute improvement initiatives, constantly striving for enhanced performance
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and subcontractors to ensure departments have access to needed resources in order to complete projects and foster positive partnerships
  • Manage budgets, schedules, and resources to ensure that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required level of quality while also maximizing utilization of internal teams to avoid downtime
  • P&L responsibility for all programs
  • Encourage a strong focus on safety and promote safe work practices to ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA regulations and best practices
  • Continually monitor organizational specifications and processes for opportunities to more efficiently achieve our long-term market and operating objectives
  • Preparation of budgets and estimates for large scale construction programs/projects
  • Supervise overall construction effort to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with design, budget and schedule
  • Establish and maintain relationships with the contractors, design professionals and local building officials; Maintain detailed, accurate, and concise daily project records, data, and documentation
  • Hold vendors and contractors accountable for quality, completeness and timely work;
  • Identify and document all change orders; Monitor cost reporting to assure estimates are met
  • High level oversight of vendor invoices to ensure accurate billing and that all work is completed as billed
  • Obtain and thoroughly review necessary bid documents, create plan matrix, contact subcontractors, and bid prospective projects in collaboration with executive management
  • Communicate with clients and Regional VPs daily regarding schedule, changes, options, potential problems/solutions; conduct site visits routinely and as appropriate
  • Evaluate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting metrics, turning analysis into action plans to optimize performance, identify operational trends, and anticipate business needs
  • Build positive and productive relationships with others and generate trust with clients, vendors, and colleagues
  • Other projects or duties as assigned


Required Skills/Abilities

  • 10+ years experience in large scale construction program and project leadership in progressively senior positions, including all elements of scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, resources and communications
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, business management, project management or related field; master’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  •  Strong knowledge of utility construction (telecommunications, water/sewer, power, etc)
  • Strong background in competitively bidding, negotiating, winning, and successfully executing large-scale construction projects
  • Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting, coordinating resources, training, and safety compliance
  • Ability to foster and demonstrate integrity that shows support for the company, its values, and the employees, while maintaining constant focus on meeting/exceeding customer requirements and expectations
  • Ability to effectively lead and communicate clear expectations, goals, and vision to a diverse group of team members at all levels
  • Strong computer skills; Proficient in MS Office including Excel, Google Suite, and Adobe software applications
  • Positive, solutions-oriented attitude with strong analytical, and innovative problem- solving skills; ability to work efficiently, organize and prioritize tasks to completion, and quickly pivot as unexpected priorities arise while demonstrating sound judgment and ensuring attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required; ability to clearly, professionally, and effectively communicate and interpret technical information
  • Ability to work after hours, some weekends, and evenings when needed
  • Ability to travel as needed to perform duties of the position up to 75% of the time

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, driving a vehicle, and/or standing
  • May experience long hours of standing and moving
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
